Sri Lanka Visas
If you’re planning a holiday to Sri Lanka, you’ll almost certainly need a visa but don’t worry, the process is quick and straightforward. Most travelers can get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before they arrive, meaning no embassy visits or piles of paperwork. Here’s my simple guide to help you understand the types of visas, how to apply, and what to expect when you land.
Types of Sri Lanka Visas
- Tourist ETA: The most popular option for holidays. It’s valid for up to 30 days and allows two entries.
- Business ETA: For conferences, meetings, or short-term work visits.
- Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Sri Lanka for up to 48 hours.
Who Needs a Visa?
Pretty much everyone except nationals from Singapore, Maldives, and Seychelles. If you’re from anywhere else, you’ll need to apply for an ETA before you travel. The official ETA website keeps an updated list of eligible countries, so it’s always worth checking.
How to Apply for a Sri Lanka ETA
- Head to the official Sri Lanka ETA website (www.eta.gov.lk).
- Pick your visa type (Tourist, Business, or Transit).
- Fill in your details exactly as they appear in your passport.
- Pay the fee online using a debit or credit card.
- Wait for your approval email usually within 24 hours, but I recommend applying 3–5 days before your trip just in case.
Costs & Validity
- Fee: USD 50 for most travelers.
- Validity: 30 days from arrival.
- Extensions: You can extend your visa up to 180 days by visiting the Department of Immigration in Colombo.
On Arrival in Sri Lanka
When you land, immigration will check your:
- ETA approval
- Passport (must be valid for at least 6 months)
- Sometimes, proof of onward travel and enough funds for your stay
Extensions & Longer Stays
If you fall in love with Sri Lanka (and many do), you can extend your visa in 60- or 90-day blocks, up to a maximum of 180 days. Just make sure to do this before your ETA expires.
What to Expect
- The ETA process is all online — no embassy queues.
- Approval is fast, but peak seasons can mean small delays.
- Be careful of unofficial third-party sites charging more than the official fee.
